The City of Gold Kanazawa literally translates to “Marsh of Gold.” It is a name well-earned: this city in Ishikawa Prefecture produces 99% of Japan’s domestic gold leaf (Kinpaku). The humid climate of the region is said to be perfect for handling the static-prone, ultra-thin metal.
While you will see gold leaf on everything in Kanazawa—from soft-serve ice cream to facial masks—the most satisfying way to appreciate this craftsmanship is to apply it yourself in a Gold Leaf Pasting Experience (Kinpaku-hari). It is a delicate art that requires holding your breath, quite literally.
The Science of 1/10,000th of a Millimeter
Before you start, the artisan will explain the material. A piece of gold the size of a coin is hammered between sheets of special paper until it stretches into a tatami-mat-sized sheet only 0.0001 mm thick. It is so thin that it will disappear if you rub it between your fingers, and a stray breath can blow it away forever.
The Process: Tension and Release
Most workshops allow you to decorate a small item, such as a lacquer plate, a small box, or a pair of chopsticks.
1. Designing (Masking) You create a design using masking tape or stencil stickers.
- Patterns: Traditional motifs include cherry blossoms, rabbits (a symbol of luck), or geometric patterns.
- Technique: You apply a special adhesive glue to the areas where you want the gold to stick. The glue must dry to a specific tackiness—not too wet, not too dry.
2. Handling the Gold This is the thrilling part. You cannot touch the gold leaf with your hands; the oils on your skin will tarnish it, and it will stick to you instantly.
- Bamboo Tweezers: You use specialized bamboo tools to lift the shimmering, fluttering sheet of gold.
- Static Electricity: Often, the artisan will gently rub the bamboo tool against their clothing to create a static charge, which attracts the gold leaf just enough to lift it.
3. Application You place the gold sheet over your glued design. Then, using a soft brush or cotton pad, you gently press it down. You must be firm enough to adhere it but gentle enough not to tear the delicate surface.
4. The Reveal Once the gold is set, you peel away the masking tape or stencil. The excess gold lifts away, leaving behind your design in brilliant, gleaming 24-karat perfection. The contrast between the black lacquer base and the bright gold is striking.
