Harry Potter Studio Tour Tokyo — Behind the Magic

Walk Into the Movies Opened in June 2023 on the site of the former Toshimaen amusement park, Warner Bros. Studio Tour Tokyo – The Making of Harry Potter is the largest indoor Harry Potter attraction in the world.

Crucial Distinction: This is NOT a theme park like Universal Studios Japan. There are no roller coasters. This is a massive, walking museum that takes you behind the scenes of the film production. It focuses on sets, costumes, props, and filmmaking technology.

The Scale: Bigger than London

While based on the original London tour, the Tokyo version includes exclusive sets and is physically larger.

  • Duration: Expect to spend at least 4 to 5 hours here. It is a one-way walking route, and there is so much to see that rushing is impossible.

The Sets: Immersive Detail

  • The Great Hall: You step through the massive doors into the actual Great Hall set. The floor is real York stone.
  • Diagon Alley: You can walk past Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes and Gringotts Bank. The lighting cycles between day and night, changing the atmosphere.
  • The Ministry of Magic: Exclusive to Tokyo. This is the world’s first full-scale Ministry set. It is massive, featuring the giant “Magic is Might” statue and green tiled fireplaces where staff would “floo” in. You can actually step into a fireplace and have a video taken of you arriving at the Ministry with smoke effects.

Interactive Experiences

Your entry ticket acts as a key (via a QR code) to record experiences.

  • Quidditch Spectator: You stand in a stand in front of a green screen. The director shouts instructions (“Cheer!”, “Boo!”, “Dodge the Bludger!”). Later, you see yourself composited into a scene from the movie.
  • Moving Portraits: You can film yourself, and your face is mapped onto a painting on the walls of Hogwarts.

Food: The World’s Largest Butterbeer Bar

Midway through the tour, there is an outdoor Backlot Cafe.

  • Butterbeer: The Tokyo tour features the world’s largest Butterbeer bar. You can drink the sweet, frothy beverage and keep the tankard (mug) as a souvenir—there is a washing station nearby to rinse it out.
  • Themed Food: The cafes serve Hogwarts House-themed plates (Gryffindor, Slytherin, etc.) and Hedwig-shaped cakes.

Ticket Strategy

  • Reservation Only: Tickets must be bought in advance online. They are not sold at the venue.
  • Booking Window: Tickets are released months in advance and weekends sell out quickly.
  • Cosplay: Many visitors dress up in robes and carry wands. It is highly encouraged and adds to the immersion.

This tour is a deep, loving tribute to the craftsmanship of filmmaking, allowing fans to live inside the Wizarding World at their own pace.
