Kanazawa Food Guide: Discover the Seafood Capital of the Japan Sea Coast

Kanazawa food

Kanazawa is often called “Little Kyoto” for its preserved samurai districts and geisha quarters, but the food here is entirely its own. Located on the Japan Sea coast, this city has some of the freshest seafood in Japan – especially in winter. Having visited during peak crab season, I can confirm that Kanazawa is a seafood lover’s paradise. Here are 5 must-try dishes.

Kaisendon: The Ultimate Seafood Bowl

Kaisendon

Kaisendon is a rice bowl piled high with the freshest seafood from the Japan Sea – sweet shrimp, crab, sea urchin, salmon roe, tuna, and seasonal fish. At Omicho Market, you can customize your bowl with whatever catches your eye. The seafood here is so fresh it practically melts in your mouth. This is Kanazawa on a plate.

Where to try: Omicho Market or Kanazawa Station’s restaurants.

Price: JPY 2,000-5,000

Kaga Vegetables: Farm-to-Table Tradition

Kaga Vegetables

Kaga yasai are traditional vegetables grown in the Kaga region for centuries – things like kinjiso, gobo, and colorful winter greens. They appear in everything from tempura to pickles to hot pots. The cold winters make these vegetables incredibly sweet and flavorful. You’ll taste the difference immediately.

Where to try: Traditional restaurants throughout Kanazawa.

Price: Varies by dish

Jibuni: Kanazawa’s Signature Duck Stew

Jibuni

Jibuni is Kanazawa’s signature dish – duck (or chicken) and vegetables simmered in a sweet-savory broth with wheat gluten. It’s traditionally cooked in a shallow copper pot. The broth is thickened and deeply flavorful, perfect over rice. This is comfort food with centuries of history behind it.

Where to try: Traditional restaurants in the Higashi Chaya district.

Price: JPY 1,500-3,000

Snow Crab: Winter’s Greatest Treasure

Snow Crab

Kanazawa’s snow crab (zuwai-gani) is legendary. Caught in the cold Japan Sea waters, these crabs are sweet, delicate, and incredibly fresh. Winter is the only time to get them (November to March). Whether grilled, boiled, served as sashimi, or in a hot pot – this is seafood at its absolute finest. Book early at popular restaurants.

Where to try: Specialized crab restaurants in Kanazawa.

Price: JPY 3,000-10,000+ depending on size

Best season: November to March

Gold Leaf Ice Cream: Edible Luxury

Gold Leaf Ice Cream

Kanazawa produces 99% of Japan’s gold leaf, so naturally they put it on everything – including ice cream. Gold leaf soft-serve is the city’s most Instagrammable treat. The gold doesn’t affect the flavor (it’s tasteless), but it makes for a memorable experience. You’ll find gold leaf on everything from coffee to curry too.

Where to try: Higashi Chaya district or shops near Kenrokuen.

Price: JPY 500-800
