Ise-Shima — The Spiritual Heart of Japan and the Bay of Pearls

Located in Mie Prefecture, the Ise-Shima region holds a special place in the Japanese soul. It is home to Japan’s most sacred Shinto shrine, Ise Jingu, and boasts a rugged coastline famous for producing the world’s finest pearls and seafood. For centuries, Japanese people have longed to make a pilgrimage to Ise at least once in their lifetime, a journey known as “O-Ise-Mairi.”

Ise Jingu: The Soul of Japan

Ise Jingu is not a single building but a complex of 125 shrines, centered around two main sites: Naiku (Inner Shrine) and Geku (Outer Shrine).

  • Naiku: Dedicated to Amaterasu Omikami (the Sun Goddess and ancestral deity of the Imperial Family), this is the holiest site in Shinto. Crossing the wooden Uji Bridge over the Isuzu River symbolizes entering a sacred realm. The atmosphere is profoundly serene, with simple, ancient architectural styles nestled within a forest of giant cedar trees.
  • Shikinen Sengu: Uniquely, the sanctuary buildings are completely rebuilt every 20 years using new wood and fresh thatch, a tradition that has continued for over 1,300 years. This symbolizes the Shinto concept of constant renewal (Tokowaka) and the passing of skills to the next generation.

Okage Yokocho: A Taste of Old Japan

Right outside the Inner Shrine lies Oharai-machi and its central district, Okage Yokocho. This bustling area recreates the townscape of the Edo to Meiji periods.

  • Akafuku Mochi: You must try this classic sweet—soft rice cake topped with smooth, wave-patterned red bean paste. It is the iconic souvenir of Ise.
  • Ise Udon: Unlike the chewy udon of other regions, Ise Udon is famously thick and soft, served with a rich, dark soy sauce-based gravy.

Toba and Shima: The Sea of Pearls

A short train ride takes you to the stunning coastline of Toba and Shima.

  • Mikimoto Pearl Island: Located in Toba, this is where Kokichi Mikimoto became the first person in the world to successfully cultivate pearls in 1893. Visitors can learn the history of pearls and watch demonstrations by Ama (female free-divers) who traditionally collected oysters without breathing equipment.
  • Ago Bay: The Yokoyama Observation Deck offers a breathtaking panoramic view of Ago Bay, a complex rias coastline dotted with pearl cultivation rafts and small islands.

Gourmet Treasures

The region is a culinary powerhouse, blessed by both the mountains and the sea.

  • Ise Ebi (Spiny Lobster): Considered a symbol of longevity and a high-end delicacy, it is renowned for its firm texture and sweetness.
  • Matsusaka Beef: Just a short distance away is Matsusaka City, famous for its beef that rivals Kobe beef. It is known for its high fat-to-meat ratio and tenderness so extreme it can be cut with chopsticks.

From the spiritual silence of the Grand Shrine to the bustle of the market and the sparkle of the sea, Ise-Shima offers a journey that touches the deep roots of Japanese tradition.
