Osaka — The Nation’s Kitchen and City of Laughter

Located in the heart of the Kansai region, Osaka is Japan’s third-largest city and the antithesis of Tokyo. While Tokyo is polished and polite, Osaka is loud, vibrant, and incredibly friendly. Known historically as Tenka no Daidokoro (“The Nation’s Kitchen”), it is a city obsessed with food, governed by the motto Kuidaore—”eat until you drop” (or literally, “eat until you go bankrupt”).

It is a city of neon lights, comedy, and a warm, chaotic energy that charms everyone who visits.

Dotonbori: The Neon Heart

The most iconic image of Osaka is the Dotonbori district along the canal. At night, the area explodes with neon light reflections on the water.

  • The Glico Man: The massive running man sign is the unofficial symbol of Osaka. Striking a pose on the Ebisu Bridge (Ebisubashi) with the Glico Man in the background is a mandatory rite of passage for tourists.
  • Giant Signage: The streets are lined with outrageous 3D signs—a giant moving crab, a massive pufferfish, and a dragon—beckoning hungry customers into restaurants.

Osaka Castle: The Symbol of Power

Standing tall in the center of the city is Osaka Castle (Osakajo). Built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the warlord who unified Japan in the 16th century, it was designed to be the grandest castle in the land.

  • The Keep: The main tower, with its teal roof and golden embellishments, is a reconstruction that houses a modern museum. The view from the top offers a panoramic look at the city skyline.
  • The Park: The surrounding castle park is a massive green space famous for its plum blossoms in late winter and cherry blossoms in spring, making it a favorite picnic spot for locals.

Shinsekai: The Retro Future

For a glimpse of “Deep Osaka,” head to Shinsekai (“New World”). Developed in 1912, this district was originally modeled after Paris and New York but now retains a distinctively retro, Showa-era atmosphere.

  • Tsutenkaku Tower: The “Tower Reaching Heaven” stands at the center of the district. It is less about the height and more about the nostalgic charm.
  • Billiken: Look for the statues of Billiken, the “God of Things As They Ought To Be.” It is said that rubbing the soles of his feet brings good luck.

The Soul Food of Osaka

You cannot talk about Osaka without talking about flour-based food (Konamon).

  • Takoyaki: These piping hot, spherical snacks filled with octopus pieces are everywhere. Watching the vendors expertly flip the balls with metal picks at lightning speed is mesmerizing.
  • Okonomiyaki: Osaka-style savory pancakes are mixed (batter and cabbage) before grilling, resulting in a fluffy texture. It is often topped with dancing bonito flakes and mayonnaise.
  • Kushikatsu: A Shinsekai specialty. Skewers of meat, vegetables, and even cheese are battered, deep-fried, and dipped into a communal sauce pot.
    • The Golden Rule: “No Double Dipping!” (Nido-zuke Kinshi). Since the sauce is shared, you dip your skewer only once before eating.

Universal Studios Japan (USJ)

Osaka is also home to Universal Studios Japan, one of the world’s leading theme parks.

  • Super Nintendo World: The recently opened area brings the world of Mario to life with incredible detail. Entering through the green pipe and seeing Bowser’s Castle is a dream come true for gamers.
  • The Wizarding World of Harry Potter: A meticulously recreated Hogsmeade and Hogwarts castle remains a massive draw for fans.

From the friendly banter of the locals to the sizzling sounds of the food stalls, Osaka is a city that energizes you with its unpretentious and joyful spirit.
