Located on the northwest coast of Kyushu, Nagasaki is a city like no other in Japan. Geographically, it is a dramatic “city of slopes,” with houses clinging to steep hillsides surrounding a deep, narrow harbor. Historically, it was the only port open to the outside world during Japan’s two centuries of isolation (Sakoku).
This unique history has created a city where Japanese, Chinese, and European cultures blend seamlessly—evident in its food, architecture, and festivals. It is also, alongside Hiroshima, a city that bears the scars of atomic history, transforming tragedy into a powerful message of peace.
The Ten Million Dollar Night View
Nagasaki is officially recognized as having one of the “Top Three Night Views in the World” (alongside Monaco and Shanghai).
- Mount Inasa: The best vantage point is the summit of Mount Inasa. Accessible by a glass-walled ropeway, the observation deck offers a 360-degree view. At night, the lights of the houses rising up the steep hills create a bowl of shimmering light that looks like a jewelry box spilled open.
Glover Garden: A Romance of the 19th Century
Overlooking the harbor stands Glover Garden, an open-air museum preserving the Western-style mansions of glorious merchants who settled here in the late 1800s.
- Thomas Glover House: The oldest Western-style wooden building in Japan. Its colonial architecture and flower-filled gardens evoke the era of the Meiji Restoration.
- Madame Butterfly: The garden is closely associated with Puccini’s opera “Madame Butterfly,” and statues of the composer and the diva Tamaki Miura stand in the park.
- Oura Church: Just below the garden is Japan’s oldest standing church, built in 1864. It is a National Treasure and a testament to the “Hidden Christians” who kept their faith alive in secret for centuries.
Gunkanjima: The Battleship Island
A short boat ride from the harbor takes you to Hashima, commonly known as Gunkanjima (Battleship Island) because its silhouette resembles a warship.
- Industrial Ruins: Once the most densely populated place on Earth, this coal-mining island was abandoned in 1974. Today, visitors can tour the ghostly concrete ruins of apartment blocks and schools. It is a haunting, cinematic reminder of Japan’s rapid industrialization (and famously featured in the James Bond movie Skyfall).
Nagasaki Peace Park
Like Hiroshima, Nagasaki is a city dedicated to peace.
- The Peace Statue: The focal point of the Peace Park is the massive 10-meter blue-bronze statue. His right hand points to the sky (the threat of nuclear weapons), his left hand extends horizontally (eternal peace), and his eyes are closed in prayer for the victims.
- Hypocenter Park: A black monolith marks the exact ground zero of the explosion on August 9, 1945. Nearby, the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum tells the story of the event with somber precision.
A Melting Pot of Flavors
Nagasaki’s food culture is distinctively “Wakon-Yosai” (Japanese spirit, Western learning) and Chinese-influenced.
- Nagasaki Champon: A hearty noodle soup created by a local Chinese restaurant to feed hungry students cheap, nutritious food. Thick noodles are boiled directly in a rich soup made from pork and chicken bones, loaded with cabbage, seafood, and pork.
- Castella: Brought by Portuguese missionaries in the 16th century, this sponge cake has evolved into a Nagasaki specialty. It is moist, sweet, and has a characteristic layer of coarse sugar crystals on the bottom.
- Turk Rice: A “grown-up’s kids meal.” It is a single plate piled with pilaf rice, spaghetti, and a pork cutlet (tonkatsu), often topped with curry sauce.
From the haunting ruins of Gunkanjima to the glittering lights of the harbor and the sweet taste of Castella, Nagasaki offers a travel experience that is exotic, emotional, and deeply memorable.
