Okinawa — The Island Kingdom of Blue Seas and Ancient Spirits

Far to the south of mainland Japan lies Okinawa, a chain of subtropical islands that feel almost like a different country. And in a way, it once was. For centuries, this was the independent Ryukyu Kingdom, a prosperous trading hub connecting Japan, China, and Southeast Asia.

This unique history has created a vibrant culture distinct from the rest of Japan, characterized by a laid-back island pace known as “Uchina Time,” deeply rooted ancestral traditions, and a cuisine celebrated for promoting longevity. Of course, it is also home to some of the most breathtaking beaches and coral reefs in the world.

Shuri Castle: The Phoenix of Ryukyu

Overlooking the capital city of Naha stands Shuri Castle, the majestic seat of the Ryukyu kings for 450 years.

  • A Unique Blend: Unlike the somber castles of mainland Japan, Shuri Castle is predominantly decorated in brilliant vermilion lacquer, showcasing heavy influences from Chinese architecture while integrating Japanese styles.
  • Symbol of Resilience: Tragically, the main hall was destroyed by fire in 2019, a devastating blow to the local community. However, reconstruction is underway, and watching the castle rise from the ashes has become a powerful symbol of Okinawa’s resilient spirit. Visitors can currently observe the restoration process.

Churaumi Aquarium: A Window to the Deep

Located on the northern peninsula of the main island, the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium is widely considered one of the best in the world.

  • The Kuroshio Sea: The main attraction is a colossal tank holding 7,500 tons of water. Standing in front of the massive acrylic window and watching enormous whale sharks (up to 8.8 meters long) and graceful manta rays glide past is an awe-inspiring experience that makes you feel part of the ocean.

The Coral Blue Paradise

Okinawa’s greatest draw is its ocean. The waters here are famous for their incredible transparency and a stunning spectrum of blue commonly called “Kerama Blue.”

  • Beaches and Islands: Whether it’s driving across the bridge to the emerald waters of Kouri Island, snorkeling among colorful tropical fish in the coral reefs of the Kerama Islands, or just relaxing on white sand beaches, the ocean is central to life here.
  • Cape Manzamo: A dramatic cliff formation on the main island that looks like an elephant’s trunk dipping into the sea, offering panoramic sunset views.

Nuchigusui: Food as Medicine

Okinawa is known as one of the world’s “Blue Zones,” an area with a high concentration of centenarians. Their diet is believed to be a key factor, embodying the concept of nuchigusui (food as medicine).

  • Goya Champuru: The iconic stir-fry dish featuring goya (bitter melon) fried with tofu, egg, and pork. The bitterness is an acquired taste that many grow to love.
  • Okinawa Soba: Unlike buckwheat soba on the mainland, these noodles are made of wheat, similar to udon but with a firmer texture, served in a savory pork broth topped with tender pork belly (rafute), green onions, and pickled ginger.
  • Awamori: The local distilled spirit made from long-grain indica rice. It has a distinct, rich aroma and is often drunk with water and ice, sometimes with a squeeze of local shikuwasa citrus.

Guardians of the Island: Shisa

As you walk around, you will notice lion-dog statues called Shisa everywhere—on rooftops, at gates, and flanking entrances. They come in pairs: the one with an open mouth wards off evil spirits, and the one with a closed mouth keeps good spirits in. They are the charming, ubiquitous guardians of the islands.

From the rhythmic sound of the sanshin (a three-stringed instrument) drifting on the warm breeze to the vibrant life underwater, Okinawa offers a tropical escape that nourishes both the body and the soul.
