Aomori — The Land of Fiery Festivals, Ancient History, and Ocean Bounty

Located at the northernmost tip of Japan’s main island, Honshu, Aomori Prefecture is a land of rugged natural beauty, deep historical roots, and passionate culture. Far from the sprawling metropolises, Aomori offers travelers a chance to experience a raw and authentic side of Japan, defined by its spectacular summer festival, incredibly fresh seafood, and world-renowned apples.

The Aomori Nebuta Festival: A Summer Spectacle

The heartbeat of Aomori is the Aomori Nebuta Festival, held annually from August 2nd to 7th. It is one of Japan’s most famous and dynamic fire festivals. Massive, illuminated lantern floats called “Nebuta,” depicting fierce samurai warriors, mythical figures, and kabuki actors, are paraded through the streets at night. These colossal works of art are accompanied by thousands of dancers, known as haneto, who chant “Rassera! Rassera!” and dance energetically to the rhythm of booming taiko drums and flutes. The energy is infectious, and the sight of the glowing floats against the dark night sky is unforgettable.

If you cannot visit during the festival, you can experience its spirit year-round at the Nebuta Museum WA RASSE, conveniently located near Aomori Station. The museum displays actual, prize-winning floats from past festivals, allowing you to appreciate their overwhelming scale and intricate artistry up close.

Journey into Prehistory: Sannai-Maruyama Site

Step back thousands of years in time at the Sannai-Maruyama Site. This is one of the largest and most significant settlement sites from the Jomon Period (approx. 14,000–300 BC) in Japan. The extensive excavation revealed a sophisticated, long-term settlement that thrived here for millennia. The site features reconstructions of pit dwellings, raised-floor storehouses, and a massive, iconic six-pillared structure, offering a fascinating glimpse into the lives of prehistoric Japanese people.

A Culinary Treasure Trove: Seafood and Apples

Aomori’s unique geography, surrounded by the sea on three sides, makes it a paradise for seafood lovers.

  • Seafood: The cold, nutrient-rich waters produce some of the country’s best scallops (hotate), squid, and oma tuna. For a unique dining experience, visit the Aomori Gyosai Center (Furukawa Fish Market) to try the famous Nokke-don. You start with a bowl of rice and wander through the market stalls, buying small portions of your favorite fresh sashimi to build your own personalized seafood rice bowl.
  • Apples: Aomori is known as Japan’s “Apple Kingdom,” producing the majority of the nation’s apples. The cool climate is perfect for growing large, sweet, and crisp fruit. While the harvest season is in autumn, you can enjoy apple-related products year-round, including delicious apple pies, refreshing juices, and local apple cider.

From the fiery passion of the Nebuta Festival to the ancient whispers of the Jomon period and the fresh flavors of the land and sea, Aomori is a destination that deeply touches all the senses.
