Located in the center of Hokkaido, the towns of Furano and Biei offer some of the most picturesque landscapes in all of Japan. Far removed from the neon lights of the cities, this region is defined by rolling hills, vast fields of wildflowers, and a pastoral charm that feels more like the European countryside than typical Japan. Whether you are driving through the “Patchwork Road” or walking through carpets of purple lavender, Furano and Biei are a photographer’s dream come true.
Furano: The Kingdom of Lavender
Furano is synonymous with Lavender. While the town offers skiing in winter, it truly shines in the summer (specifically July) when the lavender fields burst into bloom, covering the hillsides in a vibrant violet hue .
The most famous spot is Farm Tomita. Here, you can stroll through fields of traditional lavender, as well as fields featuring rows of poppies, marigolds, and other flowers creating a rainbow effect. Don’t forget to try the local specialty: Lavender Soft Serve Ice Cream. It has a unique, floral refreshing taste that pairs perfectly with the summer breeze.
Biei: The Town of Hills
Just north of Furano lies Biei, a town famous for its undulating landscape.
- Patchwork Road: This scenic driving course gets its name from the appearance of the fields. Different crops (wheat, potatoes, beans) are planted in rectangular plots, creating a quilt-like pattern of greens, yellows, and browns across the hills . Famous trees, such as the “Ken & Mary Tree” (made famous by a car commercial), dot the landscape.
- The Blue Pond (Shirogane Aoiike): Hidden in the forests of Biei is the mystical Blue Pond. The water is a striking, unnatural shade of turquoise blue, caused by natural minerals dissolved in the water. The sight of withered Japanese larch and silver birch trees standing amidst the bright blue water creates a serene and almost otherworldly atmosphere .
The Best Way to Explore
While there are trains and buses, the best way to explore Furano and Biei is by rental car. The roads are wide and easy to drive, allowing you to stop whenever a beautiful view catches your eye. For those without a car, renting an electric bicycle in Biei is a popular way to breeze through the hilly terrain.
Summer is the peak season for flowers, but autumn offers golden wheat fields and harvest colors, making this region a breathtaking destination for nature lovers at any time of year.
