Kamakura — The Seaside Zen Capital and the Great Buddha

Located just an hour south of Tokyo, Kamakura is a coastal town that once served as the political center of medieval Japan. From 1185 to 1333, it was the seat of the Kamakura Shogunate, the first military government ruled by samurai. Today, it is a popular seaside destination often called the “Kyoto of Eastern Japan,” offering a rich concentration of Zen temples, Shinto shrines, and historical monuments surrounded by wooded hills and sandy beaches.

It is a place where ancient history and a relaxed, surfing-town atmosphere coexist harmoniously.

The Great Buddha of Kamakura (Kamakura Daibutsu)

The most iconic symbol of the city is the massive bronze statue of Amida Buddha at Kotoku-in Temple.

  • An Outdoor Giant: Standing at 11.3 meters (over 37 feet) tall and weighing around 121 tons, it is the second-largest monumental Buddha in Japan (after Nara’s). It originally sat inside a massive wooden hall, but the building was destroyed by typhoons and a tsunami in the 14th and 15th centuries. Since then, the Buddha has sat stoically under the open sky.
  • Step Inside: For a small fee (just 50 yen), visitors can enter the hollow interior of the statue to see the sophisticated casting technology used over 750 years ago.

Tsurugaoka Hachimangu: The Soul of the Samurai

At the geographical and cultural heart of Kamakura is Tsurugaoka Hachimangu, the city’s most important Shinto shrine. It was dedicated to Hachiman, the patron god of the samurai, by Minamoto no Yoritomo, the founder of the Kamakura Shogunate.

  • Dankazura: The shrine is approached via a long, raised pedestrian pathway called Dankazura, lined with hundreds of cherry trees that form a stunning pink tunnel in spring.
  • The Main Hall: After climbing a steep flight of stone stairs, you reach the vermilion main hall, which offers a commanding view over the city towards the sea.

The Enoden Line: A Nostalgic Ride

Exploring Kamakura is best done aboard the Enoshima Electric Railway, affectionately known as the Enoden.

  • Retro Charm: This charming, retro train line connects Kamakura station with the island of Enoshima and Fujisawa. It slowly rattles through narrow residential neighborhoods, sometimes passing just inches from house walls, before emerging onto a stunning coastline route right next to the beach.
  • The Famous Crossing: The railroad crossing near Kamakurakokomae Station is world-famous for appearing in the opening sequence of the popular anime “Slam Dunk,” drawing fans from all over to take photos with the ocean in the background.

Hokoku-ji: The Bamboo Temple

For a moment of pure Zen tranquility, head to Hokoku-ji Temple, tucked away in the hills.

  • The Bamboo Grove: Behind the main hall lies a small but dense and beautiful moso bamboo grove. Walking through the towering green stalks as sunlight filters through the leaves is a deeply calming experience.
  • Matcha Experience: Within the grove is a small teahouse where you can enjoy a bowl of frothy matcha tea and a traditional sweet while admiring the serene view.

Komachi-dori and Hato Sabure

Running parallel to the Dankazura is Komachi-dori, a bustling shopping street packed with boutiques, cafes, and food stalls.

  • Hato Sabure: The ultimate souvenir from Kamakura is Hato Sabure (Dove Shortbread) from the long-established confectionery Toshimaya. These simple, buttery, dove-shaped cookies are beloved by locals and tourists alike. The flagship store is right on Dankazura.

From the awe-inspiring presence of the Great Buddha to the charming rattle of the seaside train, Kamakura offers a perfect day-trip blend of history, culture, and coastal scenery.
