Otaru — A Nostalgic Stroll Through the Port of Glass and Canals

Just a short 30-minute train ride from Sapporo lies Otaru, a harbor city that feels like a step back in time. Unlike the modern grid of Sapporo, Otaru is defined by its historic brick warehouses and a romantic, nostalgic atmosphere. Once a bustling financial center known as the “Wall Street of the North,” it has transformed into one of Hokkaido’s most picturesque destinations.

The Otaru Canal: A Scene from a Fairy Tale

The symbol of the city is undoubtedly the Otaru Canal. Completed in 1923, this waterway was once crowded with barges unloading goods. Today, the canal is lined with old stone and brick warehouses that have been beautifully repurposed into museums, shops, and restaurants.

The canal is stunning at any time of day, but it truly comes alive at dusk. As the sun sets, 63 gas lamps along the cobblestone promenade light up, casting a warm, amber glow on the water. It is a deeply romantic scene that attracts couples and photographers from all over the world. In winter, the path is often lined with small snow candles, adding to the magical ambiance.

Sakaimachi Street: Music Boxes and Glass Art

Running parallel to the canal is Sakaimachi Street, a preserved merchant street that serves as the heart of Otaru’s shopping and culture.

  • Glassworks: Otaru is famous for its glass. Originally produced for oil lamps and fishing buoys, the industry evolved into fine craftsmanship. You can visit Kitaichi Glass to see exquisite glassware or even try blowing your own glass vase.
  • Music Boxes: At the end of the street stands the Otaru Music Box Museum. Housed in a 1912 brick building, it features thousands of music boxes from around the globe. The nostalgic melody drifting from the steam clock outside the entrance is one of the charming sounds of Otaru.

Sushi Street: The Freshest Catch

As a port town facing the Sea of Japan, Otaru’s seafood is legendary. The city boasts Sushiya-dori (Sushi Street), a street densely packed with high-quality sushi restaurants. “Otaru Sushi” is known for its generous toppings and incredible freshness. Be sure to try the local specialties: sweet sea urchin (uni) and bursting salmon roe (ikura).
