Takayama and Shirakawa-go — The Heart of the Japanese Alps

Hidden deep within the mountains of Gifu Prefecture in central Japan, Takayama (often called Hida-Takayama) and the nearby village of Shirakawa-go offer a journey into a Japan that time seems to have forgotten. Far from the concrete jungles of Tokyo, this region is defined by steep thatched roofs, pristine alpine water, and a preserved Edo-period townscape that rivals Kyoto in charm.

It is a destination of heavy snow, hearty food, and masterful craftsmanship.

Takayama’s Old Town: A Walk Through the Edo Period

The center of Takayama is the Sanmachi Suji district. Here, immaculate merchant houses from the Edo period line the narrow streets. The buildings are made of dark, aged wood, and the gutters are filled with flowing mountain water.

  • Sake Breweries: Takayama is famous for its sake, thanks to the pure alpine water and high-quality rice. Look for large cedar balls (Sugidama) hanging over the entrances of breweries. A green ball means new sake has just been pressed; a brown one means it has matured. Many breweries offer tastings for a small fee.
  • Morning Markets (Asaichi): Start your day at the Miyagawa Morning Market along the river. Local grandmothers sell fresh vegetables, homemade pickles, and sarubobo dolls (red faceless amulets for good luck) from small stalls. It’s a lively place to interact with locals.

Shirakawa-go: The Village of Praying Hands

A short bus ride from Takayama takes you to Shirakawa-go, a UNESCO World Heritage site famous for its Gassho-zukuri farmhouses.

  • Architecture for Survival: “Gassho-zukuri” means “constructed like hands in prayer,” referring to the steep 60-degree angle of the thatched roofs. This design is not just for aesthetics; it is essential to prevent the houses from collapsing under the massive weight of snow in this region, which sees some of the heaviest snowfall in Japan.
  • Winter Illuminations: While beautiful in green summer, the village is most magical in winter. On select weekends in January and February, the snow-covered houses are illuminated at night, creating a fairytale landscape that looks like a gingerbread village come to life.

Hida Beef: The Melt-in-Your-Mouth Luxury

Kobe beef may be famous, but many connoisseurs argue that Hida Beef is superior. This top-grade wagyu from the Gifu region is known for its intense marbling and rich flavor.

  • Hida Beef Sushi: In Takayama’s old town, you will see lines of people waiting for Hida Beef Sushi—slices of lightly seared, premium raw beef served on vinegared rice on a cracker (instead of a plate) so you can eat the whole thing while walking.
  • Hoba Miso: For a traditional breakfast or dinner, try Hoba Miso. Miso paste mixed with vegetables and mushrooms (and often beef) is roasted over a charcoal fire on a large dried magnolia leaf (hoba). The aroma of the burning leaf combined with the savory miso is unforgettable.

The Takayama Festival

If you visit in spring (April) or autumn (October), you can witness the Takayama Festival, ranked as one of Japan’s three most beautiful festivals.

  • The Yatai Floats: The festival features massive, ornate floats that are masterpieces of Hida woodworking craftsmanship. They are gilded with gold, decorated with intricate carvings, and draped in rich tapestries.
  • Karakuri Dolls: Many floats feature karakuri (mechanical marionettes) that perform amazing acrobatic feats, controlled by puppeteers hidden inside the float.

From the quiet dignity of the snowy villages to the bustling energy of the morning markets, the Hida region offers a deeply nostalgic look at Japan’s rural soul.
