The Future of Art In the past decade, the art collective teamLab has redefined Tokyo’s tourist landscape. Their concept of “Digital Art” involves massive, immersive projection mapping that reacts to human movement. It is not just looking at art; it is walking inside it.
Currently, there are two major TeamLab facilities in Tokyo. Tourists often confuse them, so knowing the difference is vital.
1. TeamLab Planets (Toyosu) — “Body Immersive”
Located in Toyosu (near the old fish market site), this is the most popular choice for short-term visitors.
- The Concept: “Go Barefoot.” You enter the facility, take off your shoes and socks, and roll up your pants.
- The Water: You physically walk through knee-deep water in several rooms.
- The Koi Pond: You wade through milky warm water where digital koi fish swim around your legs. When they hit you, they burst into flowers.
- The Crystal Universe: The iconic room filled with thousands of hanging LED strings. It feels like standing inside a galaxy.
- Practical Tip: Because of the mirrored floors, women should avoid wearing skirts (or wear shorts underneath). The facility provides rental shorts if needed.
2. TeamLab Borderless (Azabudai Hills) — “Mapless Discovery”
Originally in Odaiba, this museum reopened in 2024 in the new Azabudai Hills complex (near Tokyo Tower).
- The Concept: “Wander, Explore, Discover.” There are no maps and no set routes.
- Moving Art: The artworks here have “personalities.” They move out of their rooms, travel down hallways, and enter other rooms to interact with other artworks. A crow might fly from one exhibit to another. You can stand in one spot and see the room change completely over 30 minutes.
- Bubble Universe: A new flagship room featuring spheres of light that react to your presence, creating a chain reaction of light and sound.
3. TeamLab Botanical Garden (Osaka)
If you are in Osaka, TeamLab has taken over the Nagai Botanical Garden.
- Night Only: This is an open-air exhibition held only at night. The trees, lakes, and fields are lit up with eggs of light and projections. It is a beautiful way to spend an evening in nature.
Booking Advice
- Sell Outs: Both Tokyo locations sell out weeks in advance. Buying tickets online before your trip is mandatory.
- Time Slots: You book a specific entry time (e.g., 10:00–10:30 AM). Once inside, you can usually stay as long as you like (typically 2 hours).
Whether you choose the water-filled Planets or the maze-like Borderless, TeamLab offers a sensory experience that is undeniably “Tokyo”—high-tech, beautiful, and totally surreal.
